I made this before Christmas – and I want to say I made it because of a display I saw in Fabricland. I’ve never bought fabric and a pattern to duplicate a display exactly until now. The fabric is so pretty, it’s a drapey rayon/lycra knit that reminds me for some reason of stained glass in cathedral windows. The colorway is blues, blacks and navy. I purchased it at Fabricland it was $32/m regular price, I think I paid $16. I also made a navy longsleeved t to wear with it; here I have on a black knit top. And my new swishy haircut!!
Easy top, not much to say about the construction, it was a front, back and the deep cowl, then everything hemmed with a twin needle.
I thought it would be a good top to wear on the weekend to dress up what I usually wear.

You can really pull off the oversized top – very nice! Hair looks great, too.

The Fabricland displays are made by staff (on their own time!) out of fabrics that aren’t selling well on their own. Believe it or not that fabric isn’t given to them either. It is discounted, but they actually wind up paying to make projects they don’t really care for. (This is no doubt why most of the more confident seamstresses move on, they know they are worth more.)

Interesting, Merry. I actually worked for Fabricland for about 4 years. We got all materials for displays free. We had freedom to pick our own fabric, patterns etc. They did have to be approved by the store manager, and district manager if the value of the display exceeded $100. We sewed them on our own time and had to display them for one month, or two months if they were over $100 (mostly this was drapes or home decor items). We were allowed one display a month. All the staff got excited about planning and and admiring each other’s displays. Occasionally we had some fabric not selling so the manager would encourage extra displays or have everone sew one project to promote a particular item, say pajamas or halloween costumes. I thought it was an amazing perk of the job, and tax free! Imagine being able to sew your own wardrobe or decorate your house for free!!
